NLC Houston fellows gathered at the Montrose Center this weekend to learn about Digital and Campaign Management.
Beth Becker, NLC Senior Fellow consulting on Digital Strategy and Training, flew in to train fellows and executive board members. She discussed strategy and tactics while focusing on basic skills such as writing effective emails, advertising to targeted demographics, and using analytics to learn what resonates. The fellows practiced their newfound skills by writing an email promoting the fellows fundraiser and creating a platform-specific post about an editorial for different social networking sites. Returning from last year, Keir Murray shared his insights on polling.
On day two, Communications Co-Chair Fran Watson moderated a panel discussion on campaign management. U.S. Representative Gene Green and Advisory Board members State Senator Sylvia Garcia and Houston Community College Trustee Zeph Capo talked about their personal experiences. Next, Brandon Dudley lead a session on advocacy. After lunch, Alumni Co-Chair Sue Deigaard facilitated a panel on volunteer management. Speakers Jackie Aguilar and Glenn Taylor explained best practices. Another returning faculty member Mustafa Tameez examined how we can work together to strengthen our communities and our country. Mentorship Chair and Advisory Board Liaison Lillie Schechter closed the weekend by leading the group in an exercise on progressive allies.
Many thanks to current fellow Jay Mays for helping us secure the space and Selections Co-Chair Wesley Stewart for donating lunch this weekend.
