New Leaders Council - Houston is about building a stronger progressive infrastructure in Texas. Part of that work is making sure we all know each other, and all make time to just hang out - no agenda, no program, no worries. We knew exactly where to go to connect to a great history of progressives doing just that. The Texas Observer Final Fridays are borne out of longtime gatherings of progressive Texans — artists, academics, politicians, activists, and a bunch of other folks who care about civil liberties and social justice. Each month, the Observer community gathers to celebrate (and sometimes commiserate) with one another. From backyard barbecues to lectures in a community hall, no two parties look the same, but each are unified in a vision for a better Texas. So come. Hang out. Have a beer, or bring a dish to share, or just come to hang out. No pressure, no program. Meet new people, see old friends, and re-charge your batteries.
As Molly Ivins, the original host of these gatherings and a patron saint of Texas progressives, used to say: So keep fighting for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't forget to have fun doin' it.
