Houston. No zoning, incredible diversity, rich culture and history, and an attitude that if you've got a good idea and you want to work to make it happen, it doesn't matter who you are or where you came from. Families sitting on bungalow porches.
Houston. Major urban sprawl, crumbling infrastructure, a widening income and educational attainment gap, and an attitude that you might as well tear it down and build something bigger. Strangers wondering how to meet the neighbors they never see.
Can we be the city that figures out how to avoid the pitfalls of gentrification?
Come be part of the conversation and let's find out.
Learn about our panelists.
The first part of the program will be a moderated discussion featuring Houstonians with expertise in many of the issues that impact gentrification: affordable housing, aging in place, criminal justice, urban planning, education, gerrymandering, access to capital, municipal codes, and more.
The second will be an open space conversation. Each audience members will break out into a small group. Each group will dive deep on an idea or question that seizes their imagination. At the end, each group's scribe will report back on their conversation and conclusions.
The goal? Your group might raise more questions, but might decide to become an ad hoc committee to turn an idea into a plan for action. Everyone has something to contribute. New ideas, energy, and connections will spark change.
Join us! Let's get the conversation going. Let's hack gentrification!
