New Leaders Council

Mission and History

Mission & Who We Are

New Leaders Council (NLC) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that engages a diverse, collaborative national network of progressive political entrepreneurs. NLC is building a growing corps of new progressive leaders who will rise to the top of their fields and work together across sectors to build, expand, and improve the progressive infrastructure necessary for strong democracy, social justice, and equal opportunity.

NLC’s flagship program is the Institute, a rigorous 5-month training program that focuses on entrepreneurship, advocacy, organizing, and fundraising. NLC seeks out the top tier of emerging progressive leaders from around the country for the Institute, building a community of vetted, trained progressive leaders with the skills and support system to help to change the way politics is done and foster a more equitable, just America. In 2017, NLC will operate 44 Institutes around the country.

Houston Chapter History

A group of young Houston progressives started meeting in October, 2013, determined to build a stronger progressive infrastructure that engaged new generations and a wider audience, set out to create a training program focused on the future. In conversations with colleagues around the state, New Leaders Council came up, and the match was made.

Houston, proud to be the first NLC chapter in the state, welcomed new chapters in Austin and San Antonio in 2016, and looks forward to Texas chapters across the state in Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley, and maybe even East Texas by 2020.

Texas has a proud progressive history. We're here to write the next chapter.
